Trees selected for reproduction:

  • The trees have been selected in Honduras and Nicaragua using a rigorous method of identification, including DNA testing.
  • Xoco operates special farms that function as “genetic banks” for our reproduction activity.
  • The trees are of the Criollo family, hereunder a very special Criollo-Trinitario type, unique and indigenous to Honduras and Nicaragua, called “Indio Rojo”.
  • The trees are reproduced in modern high-volume nurseries in Honduras and Nicaragua.
  • The trees are delivered to cocoa farmers after some 6 months in the nurseries.
  • The trees start to produce cocoa after 24-36 months and they have a minimum productive life-span of 30 years.
